Bits Of War: Flag-- Canadian View-- Waste of $30 Million
Bits Of War about the War of 1812: //// 1. FLAG-- 2-22-13 Hartford County, Maryland will be flying the American circa-1812 flag at all county buildings for the next 22 months. //// 2. CANADIAN VIEW-- 2-21-13 Buffalo (NY) Business First reports that the Toronto Globe and Mail says that only 15% of Canadians feel more patriotic because of the war and only 30% believe it was worthwhile. //// 3. WASTE OF $30 MILLION-- The 2-21-13 Daily Brew (Can) says a Globe and Mail report said that most Canadians did not feel the government should have spent that much money to commemorate the war. Bits of War: Olympics Money-- USS Constitution Stamp-- Savannah and the War
Bits of News About the War.
1. OLYMPICS MONEY-- It was estimated that the Canadian government spent $1.65 million on the War of 1812 commercials it ran during the Olympics.
2. USS CONSTITUTION STAMP-- Some 25 million stamps of the famous ship went on sale last August. People could get First-Day-of-Issue Stamp at the Charleston Navy Yard next to the "Old Ironsides."
3. SAVANNAH AND THE WAR-- From the August 20, 2012, Savannah Morning News-- Hull Street is named for the captain of the USS Constitution. The live oak that gave the ship its strength along the hull was cut and milled near St. Simons, Georgia.
In 1815, Savannah named through streets after U.S. Navy captains: Hull, Perry, Mcdonough and two squares, Orleans and Chippewa, were named after key battles.

Bits of War: Warships-- American Girl-- Olympics
Bits of War
1. WARSHIPS--Five warships were on the Great Lakes last summer to commemorate the War of 1812. There were three Royal Canadian Navy ships and two U.S. Navy ships. They took a ten-week cruise.
2. AMERICAN GIRL-- introduced a new historical doll last summer. She was named Carolina and would represent a girl from Sackets Harbor, New York.
3. OLYMPICS-- There was some discussion about how much the Canadian government spent on Bicentennial ads this past summer. Some said the ads were contrary to the spirit of the Olympics which is supposed to bring countries together.

Bits of War: Sacketts Harbor-- Portland, Maine
Tidbits of the war.
1. SACKETTS HARBOR-- Feb. 5, 2013-- British-Canadians killed at Sacketts Harbor were given proper burial, but their graves were unmarked. A group is raising money to put a marker at the graves.
2. PORTLAND, MAINE-- Feb. 5, 2013-- Next to Portland's Eastern Promenade, on a grassy slope overlooking Casco Bay is a site where21 American soldiers, captured by the British, are buried.

1. ANDOVER STREETS-- From the June 1, 2012, Andover (Mass) Townsman. The Andover streets of Poor, Frye, Chadler, Lovejoy, Stevens and Abbot are all named for locals who fought in the War of 1812.
2. DAUGHTERS OF 1812-- From the June 5, 2012, Houston Chronicle. The Thomas Bay Chapter of the United States Daughters of 1812 will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the US declaration of war on June 18th.
3. WORTH CELEBRATING--June 5, 2012, Macleans, Canada, ran a poll asking if the War of 1812 was worth celebrating. The voting:
Yes, it helped create Canada 30.7%
No, it was long ago 13.6%
We should never glorify war 22.37%
WE BURNED DOWN THE WHITE HOUSE 33.33%

Bits of War: First Nations at Queenstown-- War Flag Unveiled
Some recent news about a very old war.
1. FIRST NATIONS AT QUEENSTOWN-- From the Oct. 14, 2012, Indian Country "The Battle of Queenston Heights Was the Shining Hour for Natives in War of 1812" by David P. Ball.
Eight First nation warriors besieged 1300 Americans until they were forced to withdraw by reinforcement troops. They did this by themselves with no help. Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario, is located near where this took place.
2. WAR FLAG UNVEILED-- From the Oct. 13, 2012, Ottawa Citizen "Canadian War Museum to Unveil Recently Restored War of 1812 Flag."
The silk Regimental Colour of the 104th Regiment of Foot was carried by a military unit from New Brunswick. It is on loan from the New Brunswick Museum following a long and painstaking restoration.

Bits of War: Navy Ships-- New Museum-- Powder House
Some New News About an Old War.
1. NAVY SHIPS-- From 8-22 Detroit News-- The four Navy ships touring the US and Canada for the bicentennial were in Chicago and in Milwaukee next. September 4-10, they'll be in Detroit.
2. NEW MUSEUM-- From 8-21 College Park (Md) Patch-- The new War of 1812 Visitor Ceter in Bladensburg Waterfront Park opens this weekend with ribbon-cutting tomorrow. Prince George's County and Bladensburg played a big role in the war leading to the British sacking Washington, DC.
3. POWDER HOUSE-- From the 8-23 Fairfield (Ct) Citizen-- A tour and a talk will be given for the War of 1812 Powder House and Town Hall Green on Sunday August 26th. The role of forts Union and Defiance will also be discussed. And, there will be an ox roast. I don't think I've ever had roast ox.

1. BICENTENNIAL FLAGS-- From the April 12 Niagara This Week.com-- Flags from the Bicentennial Commission can now be purchased. Resident and graphic designer Barbara Geib designed them and they have been installed on utility poles in town.
2. FORT LA MOTTE-- The April 28th WTHI TV in Terre Haute, Indiana, reported that the Fort La Motte Days were being held that weekend at the recreated War of 1812 fort at Palestine, Illinois.
3. FORT FERREE-- The April 22nd Mansfield (Ohio) News-Journal reported that Tom Hill Sr. spoke on "Fort Ferree and William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812" at the Bucyrus Historical Society.

Bits of War: Erie's Commemoration-- Illinois' Fort Johnson-- Tall Ships New York
1. ERIE'S COMMEMORATION--From the April 27th Erie (Pa) Time News by Erica Erwin. It will consist of concerts, picnics, lectures, movies, historical tours and a parade. In total, there will be over 30 events spread out over 18 months. Perry's Lake Erie fleet was built at Erie.http://www.perry200.com/
2. ILLINOIS' FORT JOHNSON-- Steve Tieken spoke in Quincy, Illinois about Fort Johnson which was built near Warsaw, Illinois during 1812. He discussed his systematic search and high-tech methods he used to record, document and preserve artifacts found at the post.
3. TALL SHIPS NEW YORK-- Seventeen Tall Ships will be visiting New York City for Op Sail 2012 for the bicentennial of the War of 1812. The ships will be open to the public from May 23rd to May 30th.

1. SONGS-- The Stratford Historical Society met at Christ Episcopal Church and heard 12 popular songs played during the war.
2. DOUGH-- The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission donated $70,000 to three groups involved in the Battle of Queenstown Heights Bicentennial.
3. AT&T-- AT&T has become the largest contributor of the War of 1812 commemoration, donating more than $1 million to it.
