200 Years Ago: American Capture of Pensacola, Florida

NOVEMBER 7TH, 1814: Troops under Major General Andrew Jackson take Pensacola, Florida, from agarrison of British and Spanish troops.  Jackson did this without authorization, but American troops occupied the town for the remainder of the war.

  1. This comment is not correct. First of all, the British had blown up the decayed Spanish fort at Pensacola and then left the area 24 hours before the Andrew Jackson got there, Second, Jackson had crossed over the border into neutral Spanish territory WITHOUT the knowledge of President Madison. The Spanish launched a vigourous protest over Jackson's illegal actions to President Madison but before he could react, Jackson withdrew his forces back into American territory. In mid - December,1814 the British under Admiral Alexander Cochrane RETURNED TO PENSACOLA and recruited Indians and some Spanish soldiers to fight with the British in the war. Then, the British fleet sailed away unmolested.
