From the Jan. 3, 2014, Toledo (Ohio) Free Press "Newsmakers 2013: War of 1812 bicentennial brought history to life" by Frank Kurow.
Re-enactors and thousands of spectators brought the war to life in the northern Ohio (then called the Northwest Territory) area in 2013.
The year 1813 began with American forces moving north into southern Michigan to Frenchtown (now Monroe, Michigan). In January 2013, the River Raisin Battlefield National Park honored those who fell at the River Raisin Massacre.
In May 1813 and again in July, British, Canadian and Indian forces attacked Fort Meigs, but failed. Three days were devoted to the fort's commemoration in July 2013 and a memorial to the Kentuckians who served in the battles was dedicated.
At nearby Fort Miamis, a marker was dedicated to the British 41st Regiment of Foot.
